Kelsey, a 16-year-old girl, is trying to figure out who she really is. With the help of her confident and edgy new friend Lexi, Kelsey takes a step towards transforming herself by getting a nose piercing. Lexi encourages Kelsey to pursue her crush, a boy named Ryan who she's been texting online. Through their messages, Kelsey feels a strong connection to Ryan, despite having never met him in person.

Kelsey can't stop thinking about Elliot, the sensitive and talented boy from her creative writing class. Despite her best friend Lexi's warnings about Elliot's girlfriend Madison, who has a reputation for tormenting anyone who crosses her, Kelsey finds herself drawn to Elliot as they collaborate on a poetry assignment.
